I saw a quote the other day that really made me pause:
“Make sure your soul gains more than your hands.”
And I thought, “Wow, that’s pretty powerful.”
I’ve been thinking about it ever since, because lately, I’ve been paying more attention to how I spend my time and energy. Not just what I’m doing, but why I’m doing it and whether it actually lines up with what matters to me.
It’s so easy to get caught up in achieving, collecting, managing, and improving. We fill our hands with all kinds of things: goals, habits, routines, and responsibilities. Some of it feels necessary. Some of it even feels good in the moment.
But there’s a difference between progress and alignment. Between doing things because they move us forward, and doing things because they look good from the outside.
We can be productive and still feel disconnected. We can be consistent and still feel off.
And that’s what this quote brought up for me.
Underneath it all, I had to ask myself:
Is this actually feeding my soul?
Am I making choices that feel aligned, or just following the script?
Am I connected to what I truly value, or just staying busy and calling it progress?
Because if we’re putting in all this effort and still feeling unsettled, maybe it’s not the effort that needs adjusting, maybe it’s the direction.
This isn’t about quitting or starting from scratch. It’s about checking in. Quietly, honestly, and without judgment.
- Do the things I say yes to reflect what I actually care about?
- Is the version of “health” or “success” I’m chasing really mine?
- Is this helping me feel more like myself, or less?
It’s not about having empty hands.
It’s about making sure what you’re holding onto means something and that your soul is gaining from it, too.
If this quote made you pause like it did for me, here are a few questions to help you check in:
- What am I working toward right now — and is it something I actually want?
- Am I pouring my energy into things that reflect who I am?
- Is anything feeling misaligned, even if it looks “right” on the outside?
You don’t need to overthink it.
You don’t need to figure it all out in one sitting.
But taking a little time to ask the questions? That’s a pretty good place to start.
